A False Paradise: The Chapter I Almost Did Not Write
Chapter 23 is the most personal thing I have ever published.
Tonight I sat with Coach T.O. Clay, Prof. Steve "Stu" Maynor Jr., Coach Rob Lytle, and Ross Blain to talk about it. And I want to be honest with you about what that chapter is really about.
It is about a grave mistake I made while serving in the military.
A positive marijuana test. A moment that could have ended everything. A decision that I cannot take back and would not try to explain away.
I chose to write about it anyway. And I chose the number 23 on purpose.
Why Chapter 23
Psalm 23 is one of the most recognized passages in scripture. "The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want." It is a chapter about being led through the valley. Not around it. Through it.
That is exactly what happened to me.
The mistake I made in the military sent me into a valley I did not expect. It stripped away the image I had built. It forced me to confront who I actually was underneath the uniform, the rank, the performance. And in that valley, something happened that I could not have manufactured on my own.
God met me there.
Not after I cleaned myself up. Not after I had a better story to tell. Right there in the middle of the worst version of the situation. That is where the spiritual journey began.
A False Paradise
The title of the chapter is not just about marijuana. It is about every comfortable lie we tell ourselves to avoid the truth of who we are and what we have done.
A false paradise is the version of life where we perform our way through the consequences instead of actually dealing with them. Where we manage the image instead of doing the inner work. Where we survive the valley without letting it change us.
I could have done that. I could have moved on, kept it quiet, and built a life on top of a foundation I never dealt with.
Instead, I wrote Chapter 23.
The Bounce Back Is Real
Here is what I want every person reading this to understand: the mistake does not have to be the end of the story.
The risk you took that went wrong. The season that disqualified you in your own mind. The thing you have been carrying quietly because you are not sure anyone would understand. That is not the final chapter.
Redemption is real. Not the kind that pretends the mistake did not happen. The kind that walks through it, owns it, and comes out the other side with something to give to someone else who is still in the valley.
That is what Born to Risk is about. That is what the SEEN Movement is about. That is what Chapter 23 is about.
The valley is not the destination. It is the preparation.
You were never meant to stay in the false paradise. You were meant to walk through the valley and come out changed.
