SEEN Conversations | Day 1: I Asked Amy Maikoski One Question
This is Day 1 of SEEN Conversations — an ongoing series where I ask one question to leaders, builders, and people doing real work in the world.
The question is always the same: What does being SEEN mean to you?
I have been sitting with this question for a long time.
Not because I do not know the answer for myself, but because I keep wondering what it means for the people around me. For the leaders who are pouring into others. For the coaches and speakers and builders who are so focused on helping everyone else find their footing that they rarely stop to ask what they personally need.
So I started asking.
Amy Maikoski was the first person I brought the question to.
Amy is a dynamic leader, speaker, and coach. She knows what it means to invest in people. To see potential in someone before they see it in themselves. To show up and help others step into what is possible for their lives. She lives what she teaches.
But I wanted to ask her something personal.
Not about her clients. Not about her work. About her.
What does being SEEN mean to you?
Her answer was powerful. And instead of telling you what she said, I will let you hear it from her.
Amy Maikoski
“Stephen, this is beautiful. Not simply the question, but the intention behind asking it. You’re creating space for SEEN to carry more than one voice, one story, or one perspective — and that says so much about the leader you are. You aren’t just telling people they matter. You’re inviting them to experience, define, and express what that means for themselves. I see your heart in this. I see the purpose. And I celebrate the way you are giving it life, brother. A beautiful contribution to humanity.” 🙏
There is something that happens when you ask someone a real question and then actually listen to the answer. When you are not waiting for your turn to talk or thinking about what to say next, but genuinely curious about what is true for that person.
That is what this series is about.
Not performance. Not polished content. Not the highlight reel version of what it means to be seen. The real thing. From real people who are living real lives and have something honest to say about what it means to be known.
Amy gave me that. I hope it lands for you the way it landed for me.
What Being SEEN Actually Means
The word SEEN is not just a brand name. It is a declaration about what every person is actually hungry for underneath all the roles they play and all the masks they wear.
To be seen is to be known. Not the performed version. Not the polished presentation. The actual person, with the actual story, including the parts that have not been resolved yet.
And when that happens, when someone looks at you without the filter of what you produce or how you perform and simply says I see you, something changes. Something that was braced relaxes. Something that was hidden starts to surface. Something that felt like too much starts to feel like exactly enough.
That is what Amy spoke to. And that is what this series is going to keep exploring, one honest conversation at a time.
SEEN. Equipped. Empowered. Needed.
More conversations coming. If this resonated, share it with someone who needs to hear it.
